Day 10: On To FlorenceAn Introduction to Florence & Michelangelo: After a scenic drive through tunnel-filled mountains and then beautiful Tuscany, we arrived in Florence. Equipped with our audio systems, Lisa guided us through the city and provided an excellent history lesson. Not surprisingly, Michelangelo was at the center of much of it, and we learned a lot about the artist who had two childhood friends that became Popes. Along the way, we saw the Duomo (The Florence Cathedral), the church that looks like it is decked out in pajamas, and the Baptistery of Saint John with its famous bronze doors. The highlight for us, however, was the Accademia. We had heard a lot about Michelangelo, but until we stood face to face with the David, I don't think we totally comprehended his greatness. Many of us are not formal art students, but we could all appreciate the beauty and majesty of David. Seeing these great works of art in person was the greatest art and history lesson we've ever had. Pictures are great, but being able to see these works in person added a whole new level of perspective to our understanding.
Dinner With Friends: Our day was topped off by another fantastic 4-course meal, this one at Ristorante Giglio Rosso. The owner was awesome and generous. He was genuinely happy to have us in his company, enjoying his flaming beef, tripasta with "pillows of heaven" as Lisa called them and a wide array of fabulous desserts. While the food was great, the highlight continues to be the people. The local hosts are wonderful, and we truly enjoy the company of our tour family. |
