Day 2: A Day in AmsterdamArt, History and Culture: Art and history came in large doses at the Rijksmuseum. Our local guide was a great story teller, and her passion and knowledge made the art come alive for us. Our history lesson continued on our narrated canal boat ride and later, on our walking tour through Amsterdam. Some highlights included the local architecture, the Homomonument, the eye-opening Red Light District, and of course, a somber visit to the Anne Frank House. It's amazing how history and culture come alive seeing these sights and landmarks first hand.
Power of the People: It's hard to believe this is our first full day with our tour group. We have made strong connections with each other in a very short amount of time. It's especially fun to see how the kids have bonded. They bring a special energy to the tour. Even Dominik, Rick Steve's tour photographer who joined us for the day, instantly became a part of our group and made a personal connection with each of us by the end of the day. A Focus on Learning: One of the things that drew us to Rick Steves' Tours was his philosophy of empowering travelers by teaching them the skills necessary to be independent travelers. On our trip to Amsterdam, Lisa, our guide, did a great job teaching us how to navigate the public transportation system and even offered us the option of staying longer in Amsterdam and finding our way back to Haarlem if we wished. |
